Does your current kitchen have design or functional elements that are causing you to wonder, “How long does it take to remodel a kitchen?”

The average kitchen renovation when using a contractor is 6 to 8 weeks. However, it does vary depending on the scale of the project and whether you have a solid idea for your kitchen design.

For some, this may sound like an inconvenience but when we’re finished you’ll have a new kitchen that’s beautiful and functions the way you want it to!

In this article, we’ll look at why it takes this long and what the kitchen remodel timeline looks like.

A kitchen remodel in process

Why do kitchen remodels take so long?

Kitchens are among the most complex rooms in your home. Think about it: There’s your heating source, wiring, plumbing, counters and cabinets, appliances, and more involved.

If you’re changing the layout of your kitchen, the electric, plumbing, and heating systems all have to be reworked as well. That takes time.

However, if you need a new kitchen, the payoff is worth it!

Kitchen remodel timeline

This is how your kitchen remodel will go, depending on the types of things you want done with your kitchen:

  1. The first step is for you to brainstorm your kitchen. Start building a vision board with paint swatches, flooring, and other things you definitely want in your new kitchen. Having a solid idea to work from saves time on the renovation process.

  2. Next up is the demolition of your current kitchen. This takes two to three days depending on the size of your kitchen. Your cabinets, counters, and flooring will all be removed. If you’re getting new appliances, the old ones will obviously go too.

  3. Now it’s time for the HVAC, plumbing, and wiring. Everything will get drawn out and then installed. This will take about a week’s time.

  4. Finally, some aesthetical changes! Drywall, insulation, and flooring is the next phase of your kitchen renovation. Your choice of floor could move the timeline around a couple of days. This step will also take about a week.

  5. Counters and cabinets come in next. Depending on the material for the countertops you choose, this can be about two weeks of work.

  6. The final steps are the trim, backsplashes, painting, and installation of any new electrical fixtures and appliances. All of this will take a few days.
